SALE REPORT - Johnston Charolais held their annual Select Charolais Bull Sale on a beautiful March day. Tom Frey and crew at the Creston Livestock Auction did a great job of moving the bulls through the ring and caring for everyone's needs.
There was a realization that over the last 10 years the cattle industry has added fat, reduced muscling and not changed the percent grading choice and prime. Marbling is influenced by two main factors: genetics and feed. That is where Johnston Charolais has directed its breeding program. Using Johnston Charolais bulls allows the feeder to feed on a hotter ration for a longer period of time with out adding unwanted fat. With the fast rate of gain, more muscling and time to reach the choice grade, the percent retail product goes way up allowing the opportunity for vastly increased profit.

Know one was more aware of these advantages than Tom Shiflett. He purchased the high seller #4468, a Surplus son who recorded a 92 lb. birth weight with a 775 weaning weight, 1413 at one year, 17.8 ribeye, rib fat of .33 and % marbling of 3.03. Tom is a repeat buyer who has seen the advantage of Johnston Charolais bulls. He was also the volume buyer with 7 head as an investment for the future.

The sale averaged $1,717 per head, with most of the bulls going to repeat buyers.

Purebred Seedstock Since the Mid-70s
Ever since Johnston Charolais started selling purebred seedstock in the mid-70s, emphasis has been on growth and overall function of the cows and bulls we produce. While maintaining that growth has been our ultimate goal through the years, we have never forgotten that our cattle must function in the real world.

Bulls we sell must be easy-doing, breeding cows in a rugged environment and producing calves without calving difficulties. Most of our bulls sell to repeat buyers year after year. This tells me that our bulls have worked well and produced calves that were desirable and profitable.
