| The “Bridle Bit Gang”It has been a unique year in extreme southeast Colorado, which is home to the Cook family, owners of Bridle Bit Simmentals (ASA #4086). Lack of moisture forced many ranchers in the area to sell out, but Erroll and Gayle, along with their three sons, Chad (wife Kristi), Brent (wife Heather) and Brad, and their fi ve grandchildren, Christopher, Darin, Montana, Austin and Dakota endured the drought conditions and fi nally got their cattle to pasture at the end of August, after the county received close to the annual rainfall in just a few weeks. The rain produced pasture growths that was unbelievable and wean weights were mind-boggling, everything considered. Good genetics always seems to show up in spite of hard times. Bridle Bit continues to produce quality cattle that perform well and look good doing it. | |
|
Bridle Bit’s goals are simple and have served them well in
the past. Selection criteria are to avoid extremes, place emphasis on
calving ease trait, maintain complete individual data,, use embryo
transfer to preserve genetics from their top producing females, utilize
the ASA’s planned mating in BBS AI program and gather carcass data on
progeny. Replacement heifers and prospective breeding bulls are selected based on performance data, visual appraisal and disposition. Bulls are sold exclusively by private treaty, relying heavily on word of mouth and reputation for promotion. Progeny not selected for breeding are placed in the BBS feedlot and sold on the grid to US Premium Beef. BBS fats consistently produce carcass data that generates premium carcass value for the Cooks. This year ninety (90%) of the Bridle Bit fats graded choice or higher. Seventy-three (73%) of individuals produced carcasses with yield grade 1 or 2 Thirty-eight (38%) of the black cattle slaughtered generated CAB premiums for Bridle Bit Simmentals. BBS has many repeat customers that crave “Bridle Bit Beef” for supper. The Cook family is anxious for you to see their Wild Wild West consignments. Bridle Bit genetics have been spread throughout this great land and trust you will find their sale heifers worth your time and consideration.
