WELLINGTON, CO – Cattlemen from Colorado and Wyoming attended the inaugural joint Colorado Red Angus & Colorado Simmental educational field day Oct.23 near here. The day-long session focused on genetic goals, Colorado State University research, and value-added marketing tips, targeted to aid cattlemen. Dr. Wade Shafer, American Simmental Association director of performance programs, highlighted the new joint genetic evaluation and multi-breed Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) efforts between Simmental and Red Angus. Shafer applauded the partnership which now has more than 9,000,000 animals in the database. “The statistical equations are the engine, but without fuel or data, you can’t run the engine,” Shafer said. He highlighted advancements, such as cow stay ability, heifer pregnancy and maintenance energy groundwork by Red Angus and the multi-breed evaluations, carcass merit sire testing, and the All-Purpose and Terminal indexes by Simmental to create “tremendous synergy.” Shafer, of Bozeman, Mont., is among the staff lending support to a new Technical Advancement committee, which includes two Coloradoans – Lorna Marshall and Willie Altenburg – among its eight elite industry advisors to help guide the industry. Colorado State University, co-host for the event held at its modern ARDEC research center, provided a review of its beef research programs. Dr. Jason Ahola highlighted the latest reproductive research, including the effectiveness of a 14-dayestrus protocol in reproductive management and monitoring efforts on ovulation detection. Dr. Denny Crews focused on genetic programs with performance, feedlot, health and carcass data under way on 3,000 steers, and also took many of the 60 field day participants on a tour of the CSU Grow Safe system. Dr. Dale Woerner spoke on the first three years of research for USDA on mandatory meat case labeling. Woerner encouraged beef producers to “tell the story” of beef’s nutritional benefits and he highlighted new, tender cuts coming out of the round that are as lean as skinless chicken breasts but packed with beef’s nutritional superiority. He also showed video of a new instrument grading technology. The afternoon session featured a panel addressing the question, “Are your calves worth $1.08 or $1.38?” Myron Edelman of the Red Angus Marketing program, Eric Christensen of Christensen Brothers, Leann Saunders of IMI Global Inc. and Dr.Kent Andersen of Pfizer Animal Health, composed the panel discussing value-added opportunities. They also addressed key elements of their respective programs, how tojoin alliances, and handling of industry threats as they each presented tips to the cattlemen. Sponsored by the Colorado Simmental Association, Colorado State University and Red Angus Association of Colorado. For More Information Contact: |
